Bonair Winery News Volume XII No 2 Summer 1997 Recycling ends We regret to end our very successful recycling program for wine bottles, but we no longer have an outlet for them. Our recycler only takes clear bttle - the same as any recycler. As soon as we find an outlet for green and brown glass, we will let you know. Shipper Recycling Continues We still give credit for returning shippers to us - even ones from California. Current recycling allowances are: 1 and 2 pack $0.50 3 and 4 pack $1.00 6 pack $2.00 12 pack $3.00 You may apply your credit to your wine purchase. BFD Riesling Takes Gold at State Fair The 1996 Bonair Barrel Fermented Dry Riesling earned a gold medal at the Central Washington State Fair (CWSF) judging in June. The CWSF is the only judging in the country in which the judging panels are made primarily of winemakers. We made the 1996 in a tryuly Alsacian style. It is bone dry, yet extremely floral in the nose. The bouquet is so floral, in fact, that people tasting the wine expect it to be quite sweet. Compare it to an Alsacian Riesling at twice the price. It is still only $7.95. BFD is an excellent accompaniment to seafood and shellfish and it is still the only wine we have found that goes well with oriental dishes. This is indeed an extraordinary wine. We made the normal 200+ cases and it is selling out fast. Don't miss this great alternative to Chardonnay. Speaking of Chardonnay, the 1994 Estate Reserve is just about history. We are down to our last pallett. The 1994 is great, but this is a wine that benefits from some bottle age. Remember the 1992 Reserve? Well, don't run short. Pick up your supply of '94 at $18.95 a bottle before it is relegated to the library. We still have some big bottle Cabernet and Chardonnay at the winery. Due to the increase in price of grapes, we have had to raise the price to $12.00, but you can still get a 25% discount with the purchase of 3 or more cases. There are still about 90 cases left of the 1993 Morrison Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. I was on the tasting panel at the CWSF that evaluated most of the cabernets from around the state. (We did not enter the Morrison 1993 Cab.) Most of the entries were oaky, tannic monsters. I came home and tasted the '93 Morrison just to make sure the tannins were soft, the fruit supple, and the oak in balance. They are and it is. Still only $14.95. Some day, we may get $40 per bottle for Cabernet like the darling wineries. Until we do, enjoy the value! Parrot Head Reunion What is a parrot head you ask? Well, to put it kindly, it is someone who dresses up in Hawaiian shirts, puts on a shark or parrot hat, sits on a deck chair under a fake palm tree, and listens to Jimmy Buffet while sipping boat drinks. Since Jimmy isn't touring the Northwest this year, we decided to get all the parrot heads together to eat some cheeseburger, mix up some boat drinks, and have some fun. With the help of Tony Tarantino, a hopeless self-professed parrot head, we think we have put together a fun evening of food, fun, and music. Be ready to name that Buffett song in our name the tune contest. Dress up and enter our "Best Dressed Parrot Head" contest. Bring your own deck chairs and fake palm trees. Bring your ingredients for a wine-based boat drink and enter our boat drink contest.
