After seventeen years in the making, Pheasant Canyon Vineyards first wines produced from fruit harvested in the fabulous 2000 vintage are ready for release according to Winemaker Ray Sandidge. In March, two wines, a 2000 Klingele Vineyard Syrah and the 2000 Minick Vineyard Syrah shall be released for sale. Both were produced under their "C. R. Sandidge" label. A third wine, a yet to be named 2000 vintage red wine blend is scheduled to be released Spring of 2003. Seventeen years ago, Ray left his employment with Washington State University where he conducted research on wine grape plants and stone fruits in order to fulfill the desire to start his own winery. After winemaking stints in New York on Long Island and three and one-half years with one of the worlds' top European estates "Georg Breuer", plus being the current Winemaker for the renowned Kestrel Vintners winery, Ray's dream finally came to fruition in 2000. Together with numerous family members, Ray formed one of the states' newest wineries namely, Pheasant Canyon Vineyards. Pheasant Canyon Vineyard's wines are produced using the Yakima Valley winery facility owned by Kestrel Vintners. The winery goal is to produce very small lots of ultra premium quality red wines. Up to four vineyard designated Syrah wines and a blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot grapes shall represent their portfolio. The name of their label is "C. R. Sandidge" in honor or four generations of men with those initials and family name. The wines will range in price from $28 to $40 per bottle. Due to the winery having no tasting room, sales will be primarily conducted via a Wine Club and direct sales to select restaurants, upscale grocery stores and wine shops. Total annual production will be about 1,200 to 1,500 cases of wine.
