His training is in plant pathology (UCBerkeley) and his main business is a commercial greenhouse specializing in African violets. In 1984, a friend who was an eastern WA winegrape grower, offered Paul all the winegrapes he could use to try his hand at making wine. For 4 or 5 years, he took up this offer and honed his skills making small amounts of mostly white wines. After a gap of a few years, in 1993, Paul decided to return to winemaking in a serious way, by bonding as a winery. The name is derived from the botanical name for African violets -- genus Saintpaulia. The winery is is still small, sharing some space with the ongoing greenhouse business. Paul is focused entirely on producing Cabernet Sauvignon and intends to produce limited amounts of excellent wine on par with the most renowned in WA state. The wineries mission statement sums it up: "To produce an "old school", hand crafted, high quality, age worthy Cabernet which will peak in complexity after cellaring for six to eight years."
